The American Political Science Association (APSA) is pleased to announce a Call for Papers from scholars interested in attending the upcoming APSA MENA Political Science Conference. This three-day program offers a unique opportunity to share and receive critical feedback on research manuscripts, network with colleagues from across the MENA region, and contribute to contemporary debates in the discipline.

Organized in partnership with Columbia Global Centers | Amman, the conference will bring together approximately 60 scholars from the Arab MENA region, including up to 30 alumni of the APSA MENA Workshops. “Arabic-language Research Development Workshop”
May 18-21, 2022 – Doha, Qatar

The American Political Science Association (APSA) is pleased to announce its first Arabic-language research development workshop to be held in Qatar from May 18-21. Organized in partnership with the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, the 4-day in-person workshop will use Arabic as the language of instruction and bring together up to 12 Arab scholars from institutions across the Arab MENA region. The training is intended for advanced MA students, PhD students, and early-career scholars who are currently based at universities or research institutes in the Arab MENA region and are undertaking research in political science and related social science disciplines.

Workshop Theme
The workshop will be led by Bassel Salloukh (Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, Qatar), May Darwich (University of Birmingham, UK), and Ammar Shamaileh (Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, Qatar). Fellows will submit their research proposals prior to the start of the workshop to allow time for facilitators and participants to read these submissions in advance. The program will provide opportunities for fellows to discuss and advance their research and include sessions on other professional development topics.

ورشة عمل تطوير بحوث العلوم السياسيّة باللغة العربيّة
١٨ إلى ٢١ مايو ٢٠٢٢ في مدينة الدوحة، قطر

يسّر الجمعية الأمريكيّة للعلوم السياسيّة الإعلان عن دعوة لتقديم الطلبات من العلماء والباحثين في بداية حياتهم المهنيّة، والذين يرغبون في المشاركة شَخْصِيًّا في ورشة العمل التي سوف تعقد في قطر لمدة 4 أيام في الفترة الواقعة بين 18 و21 مايو 2022. يتم تنظيم ورشة العمل بالشراكة مع معهد الدوحة للدراسات العليا، وستعقد باللغة العربيّة وستجمع نحو 12 باحثًا عربيًا من مؤسسات عبر منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا. الموعد النهائي لتقديم الطلبات هو يوم الأحد الموافق 6 فبراير. إن ورشة العمل مخصصّة لطلاب الدراسات العليا من الماجستير والدكتوراه والباحثين في بداية مسيرتهم المهنيّة، المنتمين حاليًا إلى جامعات أو معاهد بحثيّة في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا. البرنامج مفتوح للباحثين الذين يجرون أبحاثًا في حقل العلوم السياسيّة وتخصصّات العلوم الاجتماعيّة ذات الصلة

هيكل ورشة العمل
يقود ورشة العمل باسل صلّوخ (معهد الدوحة للدراسات العليا، قطر)، ومي درويش (جامعة برمنغهام، المملكة المتحدة)، وعمار شمايلة (معهد الدوحة للدراسات العليا، قطر). وسيقدم المشاركون مشروعات أو مسودات بحثيّة قبل بدء ورشة العمل لإتاحة الوقت للمُوجِّهين وزملائهم لقراءة هذه المقترحات مقدمًا، وعلى مدار ٤ أيام، سوف يركِّز البرنامج على توفير الفرص للزملاء لمناقشة أبحاثهم وتطويرها، ويتضمن أيضًا جلسات حول موضوعات التطوير المهني الأخرى.

“Studying Public Opinion in the Contemporary Middle East: Challenges, Opportunities and Best Practices”
June 12-17, 2022 – Amman, Jordan

A 1-week in-person workshop will be held this summer as part of the APSA MENA annual Workshops. Organized in partnership with Al Mustakilla (IIACSS), NAMA Strategic Intelligence Solutions, and the Center for Strategic Studies (CSS) at the University of Jordan, the workshop will be held from June 12-17 in Amman and will bring together up to 20 qualified applicants from the MENA region. Following their full participation in the workshop, all fellows will receive a three-year membership to APSA. A select group of fellows will be invited to present their research at the 2022 APSA Annual Meeting in Montreal. 

Workshop Theme
The workshop will be led by Mujtaba Isani (King Fahd University, Saudi Arabia), Karl Kaltenthaler (University of Akron, USA), Yuree Noh (Rhode Island College, USA), and Daniel Silverman (Carnegie Mellon University, USA). Together with selected workshop fellows, co-leaders will discuss the growing body of research that use surveys, experiments, and/or focus groups to understand what MENA populations think and want on a wide range of issues, from gender to conflict to religion to democracy. The workshop will spotlight growing areas of MENA public opinion research, such as attitudes toward gender rights, rebel governance, and more, as well as methodological best practices and techniques designed to meet the increasing practical (instability and public health) challenges facing researchers on the ground.
