Relevance, Quality, and Expedience: Political Science Responds to COVID-19<\/a><\/p>\n

Similar to other nations, the United States is firmly in the grip of a global pandemic,
\nwith little end in sight. What do we know about the political origins and consequences
\nof this public health scourge\u2014and what do we still need to learn about it and other
\nphenomena like it? In order to better bridge the distance between political science and
\npolitical practice, the American Political Science Association 2020 Annual Meeting is
\nmaking a special call for paper submissions and panels directly related to the
\nconnection between COVID-19 and politics. These submissions are open with respect to
\nsubfield and can be conceptual, theoretical, and\/or empirical in scope. We encourage
\nsubmissions at any level of analysis, including individual-level and institution-centered
\nresearch. Finally, but no less importantly, we welcome submissions from all
\nmethodological approaches. The goal behind this specific call is to make our discipline
\nmore responsive to significant political trends unfolding on the ground. In that vein, we
\nhope to facilitate the dissemination of high-quality political science research on a crucial
\ntopic by illustrating the depth and breadth of our discipline.

Black Lives, Black Deaths, and Black Protest: Political Scientists Respond (Anew) to a Persistent Challenge<\/a><\/p>\n

Anyone with even a rudimentary grasp of U.S. politics understands how deeply race
\ncuts through its polity, its institutions, and its policies. Americans are in the midst of yet
\nanother convulsion over race\u2014specifically, the systematic violence unleashed on Black
\nbodies and the manifold reactions and counter-reactions this is producing throughout
\nthe mass public and the political institutions that are supposed to represent them. There
\nare many unanswered questions about this excruciating topic. Yet we believe that
\npolitical science, as a field, has unique expertise in addressing these queries
\nthoughtfully, meaningfully, and relevantly. Fully aware of the gravity of this situation,
\nthe American Political Science Association 2020 Annual Meeting is making a special call
\nfor paper submissions and panels directly related to the topic of \u201cBlack Lives, Black
\nDeaths, and Black Protest.\u201d We hope to draw on our field\u2019s broad and racially diverse
\nexpertise in order to contribute to discourse around this issue with scientific,
\npedagogical, and practical advice and insights. Submissions can be conceptual,
